Not intending to be derogatory, just metaphorical and realistic when I say a person with dementia is not playing with a full deck. If you are a caregiver for someone with dementia then you know on a given day you are not aware of exactly how many cards he is playing with – maybe 51, perhaps 46, or even fewer as time goes on. The games he plays (again, I am being metaphorical here) on a daily basis can range from solitaire to bridge to 52 pickup. Figurative games which lead to strange results and even stranger conversations. Quite often, a caregiver will think someone is dealing from the bottom of the deck, but there is no cheating going on – only the realities of dementia.
